Can't really tell from the pics - is the trunk actually cracked or is it just surface damage to the bark?

The trunk is actually cracked. It is difficult to take a good picture of it and its even difficult to see but it is cracked. Tree is growing fine though.

Suggest you leave it to recover - Chinese elms are pretty tough and the wound should heal eventually of its own accord - wound sealant or cut paste might be beneficial to stop any infections getting in, honey is a useful substitute (nature's own antiseptic). Just a thought - this was a mail order purchase so can't you return as it was delivered damaged?

seeing the top is still growing the damage did not sever the live vein feeding the top. i would gently move the broken part back into position and secure with some kind of wrapping. electicsl tape would be the best. some helping hands to hold the break while taping would be a good idea so no further damage is done. this is going to take a few years to heal completely so no wiring in that area. best of luck and keep us posted

Thanks for the advice guys. This was a mail order and they actually did send me a new tree but also said you can do whatever with this one. So obviously I'm not going to throw it away and want to take good care of it.

Every time you move the broken part, you do more damage. You are nog going to repair a lot (Except for making the visual crack smaller) by tring to move it back. Leave it as is. As said before: COnsider a wound sealent, although I personally would not bother anymore (It has been a few days). Just leave it, and make sure you give the plant the best possible treatment now.
