I just received a Ficus Microcarpa as a house warming gift, and after having a good laugh when reading the 5 reasons why someone shouldn't gift a bonsai I am still VERY excited to care for this tree! My tree is just shy of 3'tall, and looks very healthy overall, however upon removing the decorative rock from on top of the soil (seemed pointless and more difficult to check for needed watering) I noticed a couple very small black bugs crawling on the rock, trunk, and even flying around (approx. 8 of em)
CAN ANYONE HELP ME IDENTIFY OR ADVISE HOW TO TREAT??!?!?!?
I haven't had any luck so far online and while they just seem like your everyday run of the mill bug seen in Alberta, the Safeway my friend purchased this tree at (ya I know lol) were absolutely no help to me at all.
I have attached pics I took of the little buggers that I caught. Hopefully they will help.
THANKS TO ALL IN ADVANCE!!
Sincerely,
FicusFan21

they are fungus knats which themselves are not detramental to the trees health.the problem is they thrive in wet soil and is a definate sign of overwatering. just kill them as you see them and let the trees soil dry out between waterings. a ficus this size will not be affected too much from drying out a bit
ficus do need alot of light to survive well. misting the leaves daily does them very well, they absorb alot of water through their leaves. this will also help when drying out the soil to ruin the knats happy home
