I picked up a massive Japanese Maple today. I was wondering if you guys have an idea on how old this thing is? Thanks for your time.

A minimum is 10 years in order to get a trunk that size with reasonable branches. Upper limit.. Dificult, as we don't know the sklills of the grower. Could be 30+ if the grower took its time. But probably on the lower side of the range.

Nice tree.

Well, did anyone ever feel that the acer palamatum when in green leaf mode, looks a bit at least similar to, well, cannabis indica leaf? :|

Where I come from, maples do not grow! Crappy 90-95% humid, two 3-month-long monsoon seasons, with mild summer feel and a real summer separating the monsoon intervals! Tropical climate is what this is?

This non familiarity as the nation doesnt have any type of Acers, must be why my eyes cant feel a big difference. Obviously the maple is a tree, and the other, a shrub, so the trunk is different.

I couldn't help but laugh a little...because I had noticed that it looks a little like a cannabis leaf.

Thank you :D

So, it's not just me who felt that :D

But, a wonderful bonsai tree species. Can only see it in pictures, though.
All our trees have big rounded leaves :-S Nothing like cut/split leaves apart from british brought(long back) breadfruit tree leaf, which anyway isn't bonsai friendly.

Nice tree good trunk also. When these trees grow in the field without any pruning it takes about 10 to 15 years to get trunk like That. My Old man is growing one in his garden and has been growing Free for about 25 years before that 10 years in a pot and it's trunk is almost 25cm wide. In the picture i can see that there is large cut, problably another trunk That didn't fit the design. Maybe you can still see some growingrings there?
Oh and i see that the branches are a little thin compared to it's trunk, so if you want your branches to thicken just let one strong shoot grow on that branch for a while. Without pruning it back it will eventually thicken the whole branch.
