Hi there
I just got a handsome S. giganteum that was sold as nursery stock. It looks like it was a branch that was air layered and then had a graft on it (as 'blue giant').It is about 3' tall and has a caliper of about 2/3" .
I put it in a nursery pot around 4" deep about a foot in circumference in a mix of small lava rock, haydite and pine fines. I don't want to put it in the ground (not sure my yard is suitable for that anyway). I want to get a big trunk on it before I start training it. (as big as can be expected).
I think the branch was air layered in a 4" "tall pot". The very top of the root ball still protrudes a bit (1 cm) but I'd rather pot this way than go deeper.
Your article suggests they prefer shallow potting conditions so I was trying to let it grow for a while like this.
Is this all right?
I appreciate your help!
