I have a 4 year old jade plant that has never grown "right" It acts more like a vine than a bush or tree. I put a small trellis in the pot to give it something to grow on. Now I'm excited about making it a bonsai that is if it is possible. It has rooted here and there and everywhere and a couple of the pieces have started to develop the grey "trunk." Can someone give me more detailed directions on choosing which "trunk" or cutting would be best suited to my needs. The Top Gallery has a picture of a jade tree where the rootlets have dropped to the ground giving it a really unique look. I'd love to work on getting something like that as an end result.

Post a picture if you can so we can see the tree. Good advice can't be given blindly.

I have a lovely McCoy retangular container that I'd like to use for this. It is much smaller than the pot the jade is currently in.

I've read that there is a particular type of jade grown in california that has a cascading growth pattern. I'm thinking that this may be what this is. I say that because it never stands up on it's own. Or maybe it just needs to be pruned?

Wow. That thing is out of control.It looks healthy. chopping it down is an option.If you do that, save the cuttings.Let them dry out for a couple of days and then pot them up. You could make a decent forest group with them. As for the large one. After cutting it down, let it recover and go from there.

I worry every time I prune a tree. Just take a deep breath and jump right in.

thats a very weird growth habit for a jade. were you watering it alot? looks to have been growing so fast its trunk couldnt keep up with its branches

That look like every jade I have ever owned. I can't grow them. I never knew what I was doing wrong so I gave up on them. haha

yeah same here my father grows succulents and cacti and they do great bring one to my house and they die in a month :huh:
