Deflated my j. maple and it came back with completely different leaves and they are hideous. Ugh..... please advise. Should I defoliate again?

post a picture if you could. Don't defoliate it again.

It could be a fungal infection. But a picture would help

When you defoliate a tree it uses a lot of energy to replace the leaves. You really should only defoliate a healthy tree.

1st Pic is prior to its defoliation. I've had it for about two years and it has always been a vigorously healthy tree. I've asked around and 'mr. maple' the nursery I buy from said, too much nitrogen would cause leaf distortion.

I read the text after I saw the pictures and was thinking the same thing. Too much nitrogen or a bit to less sunlight. Also Acers don't like hard water. If your living in a chalky kind of area, try boiling the water first or use mineral water to water the tree. The tree doesn't look unhealthy though, it's just that the rather long internodes and long leaves indicate that it's not feeling completely well either. just tweak a bit and make tiny adjustments to the water/feeding program and see if it improves.

japanese maple cutivators are so numerous now they have been genetically messed with so much the leaf size and shape can get a little unstable, my father has been colecting them for years and he has had trees totaly change leaf design and color . one in particular has ended up with 3 different types of leaves each type having its own color its quite weird. even my "red dragon" which has lacier deep red leaves grows pink and green fuller leaves from time to time
