I've been seriously considering getting one, would it be ok to sit next to a window with a fair amount of direct sunlight?

Problem is the area it sits on is a central heat/air conditioning unit and I'm afraid the direct hot/cold would kill my little bro.

Any advice would def be appreciated

It's not recommended at all to grow your tree over a central heating unit, the air will be too dry. Most bonsai species are grown outdoors but there are many trees that can be grown indoors, Its better to find out which species are suited to indoor bonsai, simple google indoor bonsai species to get an idea. But most importantly you will have to find another place indoors to place your tree.

Try getting a ficus variety.. Probably your best bet for a beginner indoor tree.
They can tolerate low humidity, various lighting conditions, and over/under watering

i definatly agree on getting a ficus they tolerate anything.the only thing is lighting.low light will produce larger leaves .this can be remidied easly with a CFL bulb and a clip on lamp if it is needed
