So I have a question about bonsai size. I really like the amazing trees you see at arboretums and botanical gardens. Trying to grow one of those trees was one of my main motivations for bonsai. I realize that these trees typically have been trained for a very long time, some of them more than one lifetime. Let me preface my question with my current situation:

I live in a Southern California Apartment, here I have a balcony that gets ~4 hrs of sunlight in the late afternoon. During summer I may be in Arizona for a few months. I dont have access to an area where I can plant in the ground. I also do not have a lot of space on my balcony. I dont have a lot of money that I can spend on trees. I currently have the following trees:
Juniper (3/8in trunk, 4 in tall)
Trident Maple (1/2 in trunk, 12 in tall)
Chinese Elm (1/2in trunk, 5 in tall)
Moreton Bay Ficus Cuttings (3/8in diameter)

My questions are these:
-What is the approximate time required to grow the above treess to a point where they have some decent trunk thickness (1-2 in?) and start to resemble quality medium bonsai (kifu?)? Is it a matter of a couple years or 10's of years?
-Would I be better off starting to style the trees I have now as small bonsai (mame or shohin?) and purchase larger stock once I can afford it?

Thanks for the advice!

Hi there,

Getting a tree to a trunk of 2 inches may be done within a few years, provided you give them lots of fertilizer, and a large pot to grow in. NAturally, putting them in the ground is the fastest way, but also with least control. The quickest growth is to be had by letting the foliage grow out. In full ground I have had a hawthorn double the trunk diameter each year, till the current 5 inches on a tree of 3m tall, which took about 5 years..

A way to go would be look around for people re-doing their garden en try to get some big-ass shrubs from there, and work on them, if you do not have a few yeas. Whether your current plants are suitable for mame is hard to tell from here :D
