Running the risk of sounding incompitant, I was wondering if you guys and gals could give me a basic summary of bonsai, what it requires (money, time, etc.), and why it's a great hobby.

- Thanks, Ryan

Not sounding incompetent, but a basic summary... yeah, sounds like you need to do a bit of reading, as bonsai isn't easily summarized. I'll give it a go though:

名媛直播 -> trees on trays/in pots
Money -> As little/much as you are willing to spend on it.
Time -> LOTS
Why -> teaches you patience and appreciation, gives back what effort you put into it, by means of displays of for instance green leaves, showy flowers and/or brilliant fall colours (depending on the trees you choose to work with).

....agree.
My idea about bonsai, if you find the bonsai tree interesting, inspiring and amazing then you dont have to ask what bonsai is.
Its all upon you to do what it takes to have it Or just apreciate.

Its all about art and self satisfaction..goodluck ryan, i hope you find bonsai a lifestyle.

Hi Ryan,
Sure we can give you a ! :)

For me bonsai is the unique combination of art & gardening. You need to acquire advanced artistic skills like aesthetics and colour matching, as well as a deep understanding of nature and why a tree grows the way it grows. But you also need to know a lot about gardening. You need to know what a tree needs to stay alive. You also need to know what you can, and what you can't do.

It's this combination what makes it just this challenging hobby. It takes a lot of time and experience to become relatively good in it. Especially because you have to do everything in the speed the tree tells you to do, not in the speed you want the tree to do. So patience is also a very important skill. If you have the right amount of patience, bonsai can be very relaxing too.

It can be very satisfying to see that all your experience, time and effort eventually pays off.
Results can be stunning! Take a look at for example. If these pictures inspire you so much that your willing to spend a lot of time and effort to create your own, than bonsai is the right hobby for you.

It depends how far you want to venture into bonsai, you could simple buy yourself a few bonsai and look after them, that will just require a little bit of reading up. Or you could go the other route of trying to grow your own bonsai, there or various methods some costing nothing for the initial collection of plants such as air layering or cuttings. You can even purchase some nursery plants and train them as bonsai. Its up to you how much time and money you want to spend on bonsai as a hobby. :)

名媛直播 is relaxing and frustrating, beautiful and messy and at the same time.
Make sure you read everything you can before you get a tree.

For me, what everyone above said is true. But I will take Pinkham's statement a bit further bonsai is complete contradiction.

Thanks guys! Though, I am in a bit of a complex situation. I go to school during the day for 6 hours and every other day I only have about an hour at home. Not to mention the fact that im next to broke. Is it possible to grow my own tree with such restraints?

I am in a similar constraint (being in school) so i can relate to the lack of money and time! started with a couple cheap (~$10-20) trees and am learning using them and while it has been a rough first two weeks i am enjoying quite a bit! I would recommend seeing if there are any bonsai nurseries or even normal nurseries in your area and see what they have. You can usually find a good starter tree for a good price!

For me, I've been interested in bonsai for a long time, and dabbled over the last few years. It takes patience, and attention! Discipline to take care of your tree, which will probably be needy....but the good news is it can be as complex or simple as you want! If you want a more traditional collection, it will take more work, but its about you and your plants and finding a harmony in yourself to reflect in the trees! I'm sure everyone could talk all day about it, but hope your getting the feedback you were lookin for! It's cheaper and less maintenance than a pet, so if your looking for somethin to do, go for it! Highly rewarding so far for me!
