dormant or dying?

I was recently given a Ficus retusa and I love it dearly. I live close to barcelona and we just had a two to three week cold spell. During this time I left for a weekend and when I came back about 70 % of the leaves were brown and falling off. I keep my tree inside and so I don't think it froze but is it possible that it got a little cold and went dormant. The other possibility is that I wasn't watering and misting it enough. Sometimes the earth was completely dry. I was worried about over watering so perhaps I was too frugal. I have since kept the earth moist and misted regularly. The tree seems stable but I would say that if it's doing anything it's gotten slightly worse. Is it possible that the tree just fell to sleep or am I in danger of losing the tree? Do I need to keep the earth moist or am I over watering?
Thank you

Ficus are very sensitive to changes in environment. Particularly periods of drought. So chance is that the tree is just dropping leaves because of changes in climate; Cool and dry.

Ficus love moist soil and should flourish under conditions of warm moist soil. I know its quite cold there at the moment so the warm part seems out of the picture. As leatherback said they are very sensitive to changes in their environment. Try not to move it around too much. I wouldn't let the soil completely dry out, only close to drying out. But this is from someone living in a pretty warm enviroment

thanks a lot guys,
the tree looks a little better in the last few days. still very few leaves but one baby leaf has grown and others seem to be on the way. I'm keeping it wet and not moving it around. Plus the weather has warmed up. I'm Feeling more optimistic now.

dont keep it continuously wet tho. Let it get close to drying out. If you keep the tree wet all the time you opening the tree up to infection of some sort. Good about the new shoots and warm weather . Start using an organic fertilizer once the weathers heated up and new shoots are growing.
