I agree with Joncoh. I have a ficus in my office which grows over a meter per year. Itr ALWAYS has water in the tray under the pot: Continuous moist soil. However it drains well: THere is always plenty of air in the soil too. The main problem is variation in water: If you grow a ficus under dry conditions, with should do well. If you grow a ficus under wet conditions it will also do well. If you vary the moisture in the soil a lot it will suffer. Generally most ficus species do not like to have a completely dry rootball.

Thanks everyone for your advice. It has been helpful. Please do not laugh at my handiwork. I have enjoyed repotting it and giving it some shape.
