New Acer Rubrum Growth was created by CarlExter

I woke this morning to find my Red Maple Sprouting its first growth leaves. Needless to say, I was incredibly excited. I am, however, concerned about the color of the leaves. I realize that Rubrums have, well, reddish-brown leaves, but this plant doesn't look healthy to me.

PLEASE ADVISE!!!

Hi Carl,

Nice little young-one you have there. The plant does not look too bad to me. However, the container you have it in.. Quite unsuitable!. You see that all the stones are green? THat is algea. Algea suffocate the soil, resulting eventually in root-rot and death of your plant. Also, plants like fresh air. The container you have it in, does not allow for air circulation. You notice the condensation on the side of the container? => the plant stays moist, which is very good if you would like to grow fungi, but not if you would like to grow trees. My guess is that the container is closed at the bottom?> No drainage hole in there?

This is a tricky situation. Which part of the world are you in? Going into winter or coming out of it? I hope the latter; the winter-time of year is not terrible good to have young seedlings at his stage.

In either situation, I think I would choose to transplant the seedling. First you will need to remove all the small stones from the surface. Then probaly get it out of the pot by gently filling it with luke-warm water, and this way lossen the soild a little, so you can 'pour' the seedling out, with as little damage to the plant as possible. (Unless you can see the roots, and can find a way to scoop it out without damaging the roots. Still I would saturate the soil, as it becomes easier to get it out). This is however very tricky, with an even change of survival as of death.

Maybe it is good if you first let us know where you are, so we can better judge the ircumstances..
