Cupressus (gold crest) cypress? was created by Leslie

Hi All, :cheer:

I meandered into a flower/plant shop today and found they had two small Cypress trees for sale. The tag in the soil said only "Cupressus - Gold Crest" for identification...which doesn't tell a whole lot! :S I've been doing some online researching to try and identify and research the plant however, the closest I've come to is perhaps the "obtusa-Japanese hinoki". The owner of the shop said that these little Cypresses come from the tropical South and must be grown *indoors* in a temperate climate  (I'm in southern Ontario, Canada.

I will describe these two trees. They are cone shaped, very compact and stand about 12-14 inches (30-33 cm) high from the trunk base; relatively smooth, dark reddish bark; very bright, spring-green foliage that has a distinct point at the tip.

Does anyone recognize this species and is there such a thing as an *indoor* Cypress?

The Monterey Cypress grows on the California Coast. USDA Hardiness Zones 7-9.

This is also known as the Cupressus Macrocarpa (Gold Crest)

;) hope this is the one you are looking for.

Hi Angie,

You are brilliant! That's it...that's the one! :woohoo: Thank you so much for the help and the links. It's strange tho because I tried searching thru Wikipedia and couldn't find what you found!

Hmmmm......I haven't found anything yet that says it can be grown indoors in temperate climates...sigh...however, having the proper name of the tree will definitely help in my searches. Thanks a gazillion!

:P My pleasure. I may have just started 名媛直播 but I spent years researching and finding information while in the US Army. I was the one they came to when they needed information to present to the General ..

That may be my favorite part -- learning different info about different things.

Knowledge is Power

I am currently researching the following trees ...
  • Japanese Pagoda
  • Chinese Elm
  • Blue Japanese Wisteria
  • Bamboo-Leaf Japanese Red Maple
