Thanks for the advice. So I should remove it from the little pot its in now and plant it in the garden? but how would I protect the roots?

Dig in the tree complete with pot, or place the pot in a bigger pot filled with straw or something similar.
I normally put a few trees in an unheated greenhouse/atrium.

Ahhh right fair play I will have a look and see if we have any other pots and do it that way
