Hello,
I am new to bonsai and I have read that you should leave it to grow free and leave it alone for periods.
I am not sure how I go about doing this I mean yeah just water it and leave it alone however how will I get back its lovely shape?
What exactly is involved in letting it grow free?
Many Thanks
James

Hello morpheus,
Letting the tree (the twigs) grow instead of immediatly cut them off, will help the branch thicken up. But it isn't that you just leave it for a long time, in spring let all things grow and then in summer trim it back.
If you mean letting the tree grow free in the open ground (so not in a pot) will help getting the tree thicken up, because it just have more space to let roots grow --> absorb more water. This you do (often) with trees that aren't bonsai yet, but 'start-material', you'll prepare them this way to become a great bonsai.
I don't know which point you meant, but which bonsai you had in mind to let it grow free? Can you post a picture of this?

My 名媛直播 is in a little pot situated on a window indoors I have left it to grow free for around a week now and before it started it was a lovely little bonsai and now its growing everywhere...
I have attatched a couple of pictures for you to look at. One of them is how it was and the other is after the weeks growth....
Many Thanks
James

This tree is looking really healthy! It's good to trim at this time everything back in position as it was before
It's just with growing free that you don't trim everytime there is a new, little twig but let it grow for a while and then trim everything back into it's original position.

Ahhh thanks My girlfriend got me one as I have wanted one for a while so she got it me for Easter so I was reading up on how to look after it!
So if I leave it to grow for say a week or so of free growth and then trim it back that would be fine and keep it healthy?
Many Thanks once again
James

Yes, just trim back when you see that there are more twigs growing bigger. It's not that bad if you let it grow a bit longer or less, I wouldn't worry about that
