Hi...
I've had this Ligustrum for 4 1/2 years now and in the last year the top of the tree appears to be dying off although?the lower branches still grow vigeroulsy and need regular pruning.
I keep it outside for the summer months and indoors in a due west facing window in the winter, in south UK.?I have only fed it once in the last few weeks to see if it makes any difference but it seems to have not.
I'll attach 4 photos to show the progression, the last one shows the cuurent state pof ythe tree...any help will be?welcome as I am a novice and not sure what can be done to remedy this.

The plant also has dead branches. I think lack of light in winter, fertilser in the summer. When was it last re potted?

In winter I keep it in a cool room in a window facing south-west but it is quite light there so I would have thought it would get enough light in that location.

I have only fed it twice recently in the past four weeks or so, I haven't fed it before in the last four years?because it grew so vigorously and as such I thought it didn't need it...with hind sight though maybe that's a reason it would need feeding regularly?

I haven't re-potted it since I've had, the only thing I've done is top up the soil as there seemed to be some hollow spots in the soil presumably where I have watered it from the top and it's washed the soil away?over the last four years. I only did this around four weeks ago by taking it gently out of its pot and filling the the hollow spots which were pretty small?hoping that it would improve the top branches but it doesn't seem to have made any differnce.

What puzzles me is how vigorous the lower branches are, I cut them?back around four weeks ago and already there are a lot of new shoots growing some even 3 inches long and yet nothing grows at the top. I did think maybe the pot was root-bound but would't this affect the whole tree not just the top?

The only other thing that occured to me is?that I can see part of the stem?has been removed, before I had, so at least 4 1/2 years ago,?where could there be any problem arising from that? But there is abranch below this point which has stopped growing and producing leaves. It wasn't really clear in the previous photo so I'll attach another here to show it. There doesn't appear to be any rot or visible problem there, so I can't think why this would be causing the problem after at least 4 1/2 years.

Any further help will be welcomed.

certainly four years is a long time not to re pot. Fertiliser is needed for growth and to encourage flowering if
it does It has not been pruned particularly well, from what I cam see, but no the lower cut would not cause a problem but I would not expect growth from there. What you might think is good light may not be enough for a plant, especially in winter. I think if it was mine I would re style the top of the tree , either remove the dead parts or use it in the design.

Thanks for the reply...I am a novice, so it's all a learning curve. I'll find a brighter spot for it, look at improving pruning and look to re-pot it.? Would the re-potting be better left to the Spring or is it OK to do it now?

Re potting is best done in the spring. Looking at the picture again, if it was mine I would remove the part of the trunk that goes to the dead area right down to where there is growth, drastic but I am known for being drastic! That way it might with luck bud from that area as it is likely to be alive whereas the top is almost dead. But it is your choice I am only saying what I might do.

This is a ligusturum sinense?? A temperate tree hardy in zone 6-10. It should definetely not be growing the last 4 weeks in UK. My sinenses?has not grown anything since october in Sweden (I have around 30 in different stages). Week light and livingroom conditions in winter fools the tree to waste a lot of energy when new energy is a scarse resource. I would definetely cool it down until growth stops until spring.

With that beeing said. I have had several occations of sinenses?loosing leafs on one or more branches, sometimes the whole tree. But my trees has always sprouted back in the heat of summer and I have never been forced to remove a branch I did not want to remove. So do not rush away cutting things away before at least August. This species is very strong and can come back from virtually dead when the conditions is right. One of the best beginners tree in my opinion based on my climate off cource.
