So, I received my plant today and I took a picture of it with my plant app I have on my iPhone and it identified it as Knotgrass.
Why, would it do that??

I think this question relates more to AI inmaturity than bonsai. Most search platforms will give you closly related matches and do not have enough botanical knowledge to understand the complexity of species identification.

Wisteria is a good example. When not in bloom it looks like several other species. Your app do not know that and do not care, it just want to give you a result and it often comes out wrong.

I use the Inaturalist SEEK app. That one will normally not return aproximate answers. If it can just identify genus, it will just return genus and do not return false answers. It can also be wrong at times, but a lot less frequent.

What did you think you were buying surely there was a name for the plant? Why would you look for a name for it if you knew what it was supposed to be?

Myself I use the SEEK app quite often to verify that the name of the tag is right. And it is quite interesting to see how accurate it is sometimes.

I think for a beginner, every bonsai activity that do not involves hacking it down or repotting in the wrong season is good for the behinner and the tree.

and if the plant is out of leaf it will be more difficult to identify some species. I don't use an app for identification, I have books with most species of trees.
