Hi everyone,
I recently inherited a Juniper bonsai that’s seen better days. The previous owner wasn’t able to care for it properly, and it’s been neglected for quite some time. The foliage is sparse, and the branches have a few dead spots. I’m eager to bring it back to health but feel a bit overwhelmed.
I’m looking for advice on how to start the revival process. Specifically:
- Pruning Techniques: What’s the best approach to prune a Juniper that’s been neglected? Should I do a heavy pruning to remove the dead areas, or is it better to take a more conservative approach?
- Watering and Fertilizing: How should I adjust the watering and fertilizing schedule to help the bonsai recover? I’ve heard conflicting advice about the frequency and type of fertilizer to use.
- Pest and Disease Control: Are there common pests or diseases I should be on the lookout for? How can I prevent or treat these issues effectively?
- Re-potting Considerations: Is it advisable to re-pot the Juniper right away, or should I wait until it shows signs of improvement? What should I consider when choosing the new soil mix?
- General Care Tips: Any additional tips for caring for a Juniper bonsai that’s on the mend?
I’d love to hear any success stories or experiences from others who have revived similar bonsai. Photos of your recovery projects would be greatly appreciated as well!
Thanks in advance for your help and advice!

The tree looks healthy, so no need to rush away with any urgent actions. No need to repot at the wrong time of the year. No need to make any drastic pruning. Not even any need for thinning out this season.
Just read up on general care and put it into your routines. Meanwhile study the tree and basic bonsai design. Make a plan what you want to achieve with this tree. Come late winter to early spring you can put the plan into action. Not more than one big work per year. If you do repotting one year, do big pruning next year. Never the same year. I would focus on repotting and root work as the next big work.?I do not think this tree needs any drastic changes in the near future. Conifers do not backbud on old wood very reliable. The basic design is already set. So your work is maintaining and develop not reviving or changing.

... are we sure this is a juniper? Leaves look more like Podocarpus.
Second, i cant get my head around the picture: what are these tools and the one on the left seems to float in the air, with a strange wooden shape in front of it?
Might be me? and please correct me if i'm wrong but this feels like an AI picture?

I had the same doubt about species id. Did not think about AI, but yes, I agree.
