I've been wanting to learn how to grow bonsai since I was a kid and am finally dedicating the time to learn how... but after doing some reading I am concerned that there might not be ANYTHING that could be happy where I live. I live in Minnesota, and while our climate is changing, we generally have very cold winters, and fairly hot summers. I also live in an apartment that only has north/northeast facing windows. We do have a small balcony, but it is fairly shaded due to balconies above us, and trees around the apartment. Is there ANYTHING that I could grow, indoors or out? Keeping in mind that while I have a good amount of experience with houseplants, I have no experience with bonsai.
Note that I am willing to get grow lights/humidifiers/other equipment to keep something alive IF it will work. I'm concerned that I will be unable to provide enough light even with a grow light.

There is lots of good indoor bonsai species. My Brazilian raintrees love humidity and heat. They do good all winter inside and once the temp gets up to maintaining atleast 55 degrees I set them outside for the summer. Not in direct light.
