Looking to protect my bonsai was created by Alexp31

Hi all,?

I’m from the uk, I have recently received two bonsai’s. One is a brush cherry and the other is a Chinese elm. They are currently very healthy and look well. However I would like to protect these from potential pest infection. I have noticed on the brush cherry soil that there is one or two little black insects. What is a suitable pesticide to spray onto these? Cheers?

What you see on the soil will not harm the plant. The problem in in the culture of the plant, get that right and they will disappear. I hope you have them outside and not in, you will not keep them alive long if you do. Watering is the key, water when the soil is almost dry. Then a good soak, at least twice with a rose on a can, over the leaves as well. Both species you have are hardy and do not need protection from frost. I suggest you buy a book and join a club if you are serious about bonsai, do not rely on what you see on the internet.

Pesticide as a prevention is not the right way to go. It is bad for the plant, for you and for the environment. There are billions of trees in uk that are not sprayed with pesticides and they live happy most of them. For the ones that do not do well it is not due to lack of pesticide. Learn how to take care of your trees and there will be no need for poisons. If and when you get an infection, get a mild product that is targeting the specific pest. Soap water is fine for most infestations. But do not underestimate the importancy of finding out why your tree is targeted by pests. If corrections is not done, the pests will just come back.
