What is wrong with my Chinese Elm?? was created by TommyH__

Hi! I got a Chinese elm a few weeks ago (my first tree) and have been watering once every week - once the top is has dried out. I done a little bit of pruning and wiring, as you can see in the picture, when I first got it but have since left it to grow out. For a week I have been experiencing leafs on my tree dropping and turning the colour shown in the picture. Despite this, it’s pushing out plenty of new shoots/growth. The pictures taken are just after watering the tree.?Any idea on what could be wrong, could this be due to under-watering or over watering the tree? Thanks

Once a week? No wonder it is suffering. And you have it inside, two reasons you are going to kill it. You should be checking every day and watering when needed, that could be every day, or even twice a day depending on the temperature. I am watering at least once sometimes twice if it has dried out.

Thanks for the reply! I've just been doing once a week as here in the UK its not too warm yet. I've been checking daily and the top soil is wet/damp - I wait until it changes to a lighter brown colour as Im worried about overwatering the tree.
I would place it outside but my back garden isn't the most spacious and dont have anywhere safe to place it & it sits in shade most of the day.

Well, it has been from 20C to 24 C the last week, there is more light in shade outside than inside. Put it on a table or something but it will no survive inside. The Chinese Elm is a hardy species and needs frost during the winter, that does not happen in a heated house with no light.

I'll give putting it outside a try. As for watering , what would you consider 'dried out'? I only have experience with house plants, so I have been basing my judgement on that. I have a moisture meter that I use for my plants too, would that be of any use with my tree? I haven't repotted it, so its in what I assume is pure coco coir or similar

It all depends how well it is draining. I have two trees still in the original course coc fibre, since it drains well I have no hurry to change. Watering every day from now until september. Southern sweden half shade.

Mine drains fairly well too, just holds moisture for a long time so I'm wary of causing root rot with such frequent watering

You will not get root rot from watering, especially now as it is spring and very warm, the plant will dry out quickly.
