Ever since I received?the first response the tree has been outside in shade, 2 days ago I noticed the first new growth of this year. Is this a good sign or is the tree going to expend all of its reserves?

Hmm, growth is a good sign. Not growing for the full season would be a bad sign.
Empty reserves.....Impossible to answer. Eigther it recovers or it dies. Come authum I think you will get your answer to that question.

Metasequoia likes a slightly moist soil, don't let the soil dry out to much.
Likes a slightly acid soil, but will do in most soils.
the one I have stays outside during winter and summer, in full sun, just in the hotest months partly shade.
Once healty, give plenty of fertilizer on regular basis, from april ( spring in Belgium) to late october ( end of autumn)

Growth has continued should I keep it in a shady position or move into more moderate sunny conditions - uk based so currently low 20s mixed weather conditions.

My Metasequoias are doing good in a place that gets sun approx from 12 to 16. But I have some in the greenhouse that do good in full southern exposure as well. I have experienced several times that the species do not like fast transition to increased sun exposure. They react by very fast wilting. So do any transition slowly.

UK is a big place.? Three weeks ago we were in Thurso with high temps of 10C, and a week later in Blenheim with temps 38C.?Kenshin wrote: Growth has continued should I keep it in a shady position or move into more moderate sunny conditions - uk based so currently low 20s mixed weather conditions.
In Skye, a little warmer at 15C in the day and nights 8C, and the hotel folks couldn't understand why we asked for heat. Heat, in June??
It really helps to know what climate zone you are in, but? "UK" doesn't narrow down very much.
