Hi, I'm looking for some advice please, I'm a novice to this and was given the bonsai as a gift. Recently I pruned my ficus bonsai (I think it's a Ficus, I could be wrong) it's has grown back ok and is still sprouting but one side of the tree has stopped growing and lost its leafs. This side did not get a prune, as I was happy with the shape and the existing growth. How can I encourage the growth again? Will a small prune help? Thank you

Your tree is a ficus microcarpa ginseng. A small leaf tree grafted on a more vigourous root stock. By most people in the hobby not concidered to be a bonsai.
The dead branch is, or rather was, the graft. Now it is totally dead and the only way to get it back is to make a new graft.
The reason behind the death is that the root stock was growing branches that was not removed. The tree was prioritizing the much more vigourous growth from the root stock and you let it do so by not removing them.
Next time trying, make sure to identify the grafting point and allways remove everything growing below that point as soon as it shows up.
