Indeed ficus can get sunburn. It is just that spraying water will not cause it. Sunburn is due to....Sun. and spraying water will not make any difference In neither direction. That is the myth, not the sunburn itself.

The ficus can get a sunburn if the leaves are not used to the sun, if the leaves have developed indoors.
If the ficus is mostly or during the growing season outside, it has no or not much problems with that.
I've always believed the myth about water and the midday heat, so we don't water the lawn at midday !?
If it's really a myth, it's been around for a damn long time, ... but i dont know ?!
Other opinions would be interesting

I recomend not wasting fresh water on lawns. If you really want to do it anyway, do it in the evening or night when evaporation is minimum. So I partly agree, but for another reason.
Where I live it rains quite a lot in mid summer. At the same time the sun is up more than 18 hours. It can rain for an hour or two, then sun and back to rain. If water causing sunburn on lawns mine would be in really bad condition in mid summer, but it is not. It is thriving that time of the year. Later on in summer it rains less and sometimes it turns brown. That is caused by me not watering, not the oposite.
