Greetings!

I am painting a customer's house and they asked me to identify and diagnose a Bush in their yard. Ive attached pictures. The stems are turning red and eventually the whole plant (leaves last) turns red and dies.

Does this indeed look like a Japanese Boxthorn to you? Anyone have an idea of the problem? These bushes are in Northern California near the coast in a very damp area. Customers have landscapers maintain weekly but they are lost on this too.
