Half of the bonsai died?

Hi all,
I am very surprised with my bonsai, as it seems to have the half top dry. Is that even possible?
Attached you can see two pictures, in the second picture I cut a tiny old branch and you can see the colour of the trunk.
It hasn't had any new branches in the top half in ages!
If it's dry, should I cut it?
If it's not, what should I do?

It looks like the top has died, there are plenty of shoots so it is still growing. I would leave it as it is a deadwood feature. Have a look at doing one of the courses on here and you will find out what a jinn is.

it must have lacked water at some point, for me, the cut above a shoot
