KY means nothing to me. I am in Europe in a place similar to us zone 7. Maples is an excellent beginner species here, but sometimes leaf burn in the heat of summer.

I think there are many cultivars that are excellent beginner trees in zone 6, but not all of them. Check out for what cultivars are sold as garden trees in your area.
