Leaves all falling off, need help!! was created by Charliewatson12

Hi, my bonsai has slowly started losing leaves over the past couple weeks. It has got a lot worse over the past days and it’s now nearly completely bare. Any idea why? I’ve had it about 2.5 years I don’t think I overwater it, I only water it when the soil is slightly damp to touch and very rarely forget to water it. I pulled it out from it’s pot (not sure if that was a good idea) to check the roots and there is still lots of soil and doesn’t look like it needs repotting. Although I was going to do it this spring. Any ideas what is causing this leaves to fall? It looks like it’s about to die! There is also no sign of disease or pests.

I do not know what species it is so just a general answer.
In the nortern hemisphere this time of the year all decidious trees starts to lose their leafs. This is natural and not anything to worry about.
At the same time we start to heat our homes. The heating not just increase temperature,
but also make the humidity drop. Many evergreen trees that are kept indoors dislike that and start dropping leafs. Moving them away from heating elements and to a somewhat cooler location may help. But as said, I cannot identify the species and cannot coment on the specific needs of it.

Hi, thanks for the reply. When I bought the tree it didn’t say what species it was but from research I’ve done it’s a Pepper Tree (Zanthoxylum pipertum).
The falling of the leaves has never happened before, I’ve had the tree nearly 3 years. I’m 99.9% sure it’s not deciduous.
Thanks

Zanthoxylum pipertum is a temperate decidious tree. I don't have experience with the species, but would suggest to provide a proper winter dormancy. 3 years without it is quite a long time.

I know the small leaved pepper tree as an all year green, but that depense at temperature you placed at the cold season.

In case, if you not repotted since you own it !? In my mind your Tree have not much roots for that time.
The soil has to be moist all time, never dry and no waterlogging, less leaves = less water.
Check if the soil smells musty, repotting next spring is required (mineralic soil wit a good portion of organic)
