Are these cherry blossom seeds? And any tips about propagation? was created by David06

Hello,

Let me first introduce myself, as I am new to this forum :) My name is David and have been experimenting with trees for the last two years with the goal of making my own bonsais. I am growing everything from seed :silly: (I know, maybe not the smartest for a beginner, but I feel more rewarded this way). So at the moment I am mostly trying to get the trunks thicker, while doing some basic pruning and root pruning to start getting a good branching and root system and, well, learning to keep them alive along the way, too. I hope to be able to transfer the first ones to training pots next year. Maybe you hear about them in the future :) But this is a topic for another day.

To my question, one of the trees that motivated me to start (and the one that has resisted the more to sprout) is the cherry blossom. I got a new set of seeds to try a new strategy (I am very appreciate about suggestions, too!), but I noticed that they look different than the ones I knew. I attach a picture. These seeds are sold as Prunus Serrulata, but the ones I know look a bit bigger and with an ovoid shape (these ones here are much more spherical). Is this just another variety? Are the seeds wrong?

Thank you very much!

They sure look like cherry seeds indeed. However totally impossible to say exact species or cultivar based on the seeds.

Second what TF said. I have purchased "Cherry Blossom" seeds online via CZ Grain on Amazon, and they always looked like that. However I have no confidence in them being Prunus Subhirtella versus Prunus Serrulata etc., just likely something in the Prunus family.

As the first 2 responders said it is difficult to confirm which Prunus you're looking at but they are certainly Prunus. I say just try growing them out and see what you get! it might not be P. serrulata that you want but you may end up with a gem.

I always have high success with Prunus seeds by soaking them in water for 48hours, filling a Ziplock bag with perlite and a thin layer of hydrogen peroxide (prevents mold and doesn't harm the seed/radicle when it germinates) drain out the hydrogen peroxide and put the seeds in the bag. Label it with the date and throw it in the fridge and check on it periodically. Eventually you'll see roots growing and you can put it in a pot. Could take as little as a month or as long as a year, really depends on the species and how viable the seed is.

As for where you purchased the seed. I'm always skeptical with sellers on amazon or ebay, there's not much accountability and less honest sellers can sell you what ever they want. A really good source for Tree seeds is F.W. Schumacher Co.
They sell all kinds of tree seeds (including P. serrulata) and mostly sell to commercial operations so are regulated. The also sell "Sample" seed packs for about $3.50 and comes with 5-30 seeds depending on the species. I think the JBP seeds I bought came with 40.

Good luck!
