Hi there, I hope you are well.

My last post was quite a while ago with regard to my concern about my Bonzai plant (first picture) not really growing/the branches not thickening. A lot of people recommended to place it outside, which I did and to let it grow for a year or so.

It has only been 3 months since this advice and as you can see in the 3 other pictures taken yesterday, my bonsai is currently growing pretty well.

The reason for my early return is that this strong growth has meant some of the branches are drooping slightly due to the weight of the foliage. I was wondering, should I prune a couple of the longer branches and maybe use them as cuttings to allow the rest to continue growing or should I just allow it to continue growing? My only concern is that with winter soon approaching, I might start losing this foliage, but on the other hand, I might not have enough time for cuttings to grow enough to survive the fairly cold UK winter.

this plant has obviously grown quite well this year, you need to prune the long shoots back to where the shape of the design is that you have decided on. Have you identified what species of plant it is? It is not clear from the pictures could be a Ficus not sure. If it is then it not hardy and will have to be put in a greenhouse for the winter but not until there is a risk of frost which won't be for at least two months yet. If it is not Ficus then I am not sure, you need to look at the species guides here and identify it.

Thank you for your quick response and advice, it is indeed a ficus. Please see attached an image of the trunk, I hope this helps. I will follow your advice and trim the plant back to shape.

Yes, it is, it will need to be protected from frost, so as soon as there is the possibility you must take it in.

Hi again, I have pruned the ficus back being careful not to prune too much (see second pic) as I don't want to damage the plant. Could you possibly advise if you think this is sufficient for now or if there are a few branches that should also be pruned? I have wired one branch just to guide it towards the canopy shape that the other branches are following.
