Newbie - guidance on repotting and/or pruning was created by Habbas

This is my second attempt with a bonsai. my first was the juniper which died after drying out.
I bought this from Homedepot and it was few inches tall. I have it now for 3 months and it’s growing well.
Appreciate input on:
1) What is the name of this tree
2) How do i prune it? (Perhaps if i know the name i can look that up).
3) Do i need to prune and/or repot?

I have been watering it every 3 days and make sure water flows all through you the soil. While it’s growing well, I’ve also read that it’s not advised to do this and to let it dry in between. Appreciate newbie advice.

1) This is a dwarf jade or elephant bush, portulacaria afra. Not a tree, but a succulent. By most people not considered to be a bonsai. But can be trained to look like one.

2) with scissors :). Jokes aside, you prune it to look like you want it to look. So start with a long term plan and after that do your pruning to support that. Jades can tollerate very heavy pruning. Repotting is best done in the summer dormant period. However, I would wait until the trunk is thick enough to support the final design. Until then, just uppotting when roots gets crowded.

3) There are no urgent need of doing anything. The plant is happy as is. However, if you have a plan, that plan can be suported with pruning and you and are eager to get started pruning will not hurt the plant.

BTW: watering every three days is far too much. I water my jades in big pots every 2-4 weeks in summer and not at all in the whole winter 4-6 months. The few ones I keep in living room temperature gets a little bit of water 2-3 times in winter. This is a desert species and can easily get root rot if constant moist. They really need to go totally dry inbetween watering.

BTW2: I have a hunch you tried to grow the juniper indoors. If that was the case, no watering schedule would have helped. Junipers must be grown outdoors and they die indoors. There are no way around that.
