When to start training this Japanese Juniper? was created by edpark

Hello, I recently got this Japanese Juniper (about 1 year old) and it's been growing steadily over the summer. I'm wondering - when should I begin training? Someone had suggested that I should wait another year for the tree to grow more and get stronger, but thought I'd ask here on this forum. Thank you.

In the end it depends on your final vision for the tree and that we don't know.
However. If you are happy with the current trunk size, I think it is ready. If not, just wait and let it grow freely to increase trunk size faster.
All of winter is a good time for styling. We tend to have more time awailable and junipers responds well to work in winter.

That plant is a lot more than one year old! It will make quite a nice semi or cascade, and yes can be started now, or you could take most of the long branch off and make an informal upright shohin size.

In fact there is a slight chanse with right rooting hormone to strike such a big cutting. In that case it could be one year from cutting.
In this csse I think one year refers to one year since taken out of the nurcery pot and transplanted to bonsai pot.
I totally agree that it is a nice material for cascade or shohin.
