I'd like to grow a bonsai in my apartment. But, I have very few windows for natural sunlight. And they are all in high-traffic areas where it could be, for example, knocked into, or nibbled on by a cat.
Is it possible to grow a healthy bonsai using grow lighting?
If so, what species would you recommend? And what lighting would be best?

My view on it is that some species csn be kept alive in livingroom conditions, but no species can be developed into great trees that way. With or without grow lights. That is why I and most others that have a few years in the hobby stay away from growing trees in livingroom conditions. Bringing the tropicals indoors for the winter, yes. But permanent growing in livingroom conditions, no.

I keep my Blue Jacaranda inside under grow lights, as most of the year where I live the temperature at night falls below what Tropical trees can withstand. (I do leave it outside during July August, but the other 10 months it stays inside next to my humidifier and under grow lights)
But as Tropfrog alluded to, development is severely hindered.
For reference, Blue Jacaranda can grow 3-4 feet per year in ideal conditions, and after 3 years, mine is 7 inches tall.
