Normal or Cause for Concern (Ficus Ginseng) was created by Jwu

Hello,

In the past month I've noticed my ficus ginseng roots have appeared more dried out, but leaves look fine. I usually water once every two weeks (3-4 oz), but for the past month it has been with my parents and they've been watering it every week but half the amount (1.5-2 oz). It is kept indoors with a good amount of indirect sunlight and kept around 70 degrees.

Does it look normal or should something be adjusted in its care?

I hope it is really cold and winter where you are. My ficus gets watered every day, and is growing like an idiot at the moment. Watering every 1-2 weeks during the growing season would kill mine for sure, or drop it in dormancy

Thank you for your response! That's interesting, but also it makes sense that a different environment might demand more watering. When I searched around, most advice I saw was to water once every 1-2 weeks. I wonder if anyone else has a second opinion.

In bonsai we water when the plant needs it, not on a scedule. That could be several times per day in summer and it could be as long as 3 months inbetween in winter.

This is how it is done: when soil looks slightly dry, water with a fine nozzle all over the whole soil surface until there are a steady strem of water coming out of the drainage holes.

Shouldn't water on a schedule, but rather when the soil/substrate is drying out. Also, you want to make sure the entire rootball receives water, depending on the size of your rootball/pot and soil type, watering exactly 3-4 oz may or may not be sufficient.

We have highs of 35-38C and lows of 30 or so, with sunlight for hours. I don't bother to check the soil, I water every morning. Sometimes I miss it and don't water until the afternoon, maybe 4:00 or 5:00 and at that time some of the plants are starting to wilt a little.

Winter time in the house I water the ficus every other day, or maybe three. I have a soil meter and I use that. Indoors or out, waiting a week or two would probably kill it.
