Hi

I've recently received a bonsai tree as a gift. Was wondering if anyone could confirm what type of bonsai tree it is?

This is a juniper. A temperate tree that needs to be outdoors. Indoors it will die.

Thanks for letting me know this I had no idea. I'll relocate it outside. Any further advice you could provide would be appreciated.

Do not start to work on it yet. No pruning, no wiering, no repotting. The first year is all about getting to understand the species, get the care routines right, keep it healthy and to make up a long term plan for it's development.

We don't have those juniper mallsai here. But I have heard from several sources that they often are pourly rooted cuttings. Another reason not to stress it at this early stage.

Good luck.

Many thanks for the advice and information people. It's now been relocated outside and it's been none stop rain today, I take it these trees are able to withstand wind and heavy rain? It's in a pot with a drainage hole so assume there wud be no danger of overwatering? Anyone know what the benefit of the stones in the pot are?

Many thanks

Graeme

Yes, this species can handle wind and rain in summer. Really, they love it.

However, during UK winter it benefits from overhead protection from rain.

The Stones is decoration only. If it is glued to the pot, it needs to be taken out. If not, just leave it until repotting time.

I'll check if they are glued in and remove them if so. Was some of the worst rain we've had for ages today so sure the tree will have benefitted from it. Thanks for a answering my questions and providing the advice. I'm wondering if there is anyway of estimating the age of the tree so I can plan for rewiring/shaping etc, unfortunately they people who bought me it didn't ask the age of the tree. I'll upload some photos ever few months showing the progress.

Many thanks

From the look of it I would say 3 to 5 years at most, just a young seedling or cutting in a bonsai pot. It could be thinned and wired

There are no use to ask the seller about age. Everyone is exagerating to make profit. The best answer you can get is "I don't know"

The only way to know age for sure is to cut it by the trunk and count the yearly growth. That will tell you how old the branch used for cutting was plus how many years have passet since then. The roots and trunk will die from such a test. However, if you are very skilled and use the right hormones, it is possible to root the tree again as cutting. I give it 10% to succeed.

In reality the only thing that matters in bonsai is how old you can make it look and how long it has been in your care. 名媛直播 is an art, it is up to the artist to create the artwork. But first focus on the only thing important right now, getting that cutting to survive in your care. It is not possible to create a bonsai from a dead tree.
