So i have what i believe is an eastern red cedar. It was going to be killed due to its location so i potted it.
My question, is it to soon to start shaping? Ive read 5 yrs but i have no idea how old this tree is. I assume 2-3 years maybe or a hair younger.
Sorry about quality of photos. Any advice appreciated.

Too young? In my view it is a little late, as the lower trunk is very straight and will not bend anymore.
I think the first question to you would be .. What is your long-term vision for this tree?

Honestly i didnt really have any goals in mind. Just thought it was a waste to kill it. I thought maybe i could start practicing on it.

You can shape the branches before it gets too stiff, but you'll have to deal with the straight trunk, which is not much of a problem, you can make a sort of formal upright, sometimes you just have to go with what the tree has to offer you.
You could also prune it back to the first branches and start from there, but if the base is too straight maybe it would be a little weird to sudenlly having movement on the trunk.
