Can this magnolia be used or is to big? The home owner wants it cut down but I wanted to ask before they trashed it. Im about sure it is Magnolia liliiflora. It has smaller leaves, pink flowers and drops its leaves.

My answer is no. The species is proboably good for bonsai, but not this specimen. In my opinion there are two challenges that is just too hard to overcome. That twisted trunks is not good for bonsai and the tree is already to big for liftning without too much risk. Just let it grow where it is. Trees in ground can be trained beautiful as well.

Hello, so your neighbour will it cut down anyways? I mean, the twisted trunk is in fact odd and it might be really difficult to remove.
But maybe you can work that around with some time, however it is a challenge, as removing it alive... I don't know the species, but some, you must prepare it a few months earlier to remove it, as a season to do so...
Now it's up to you to judge if it worth the time and efforts you gonna put into it.
Also, there's a thing called "Niwaki", which would be garden trees on a japanese style, similar to 名媛直播, but on the ground, in a bigger scale. But like, removing from his garden to take to yours is also a big effort, because you wouldn't like, try to convince him to just prune it right, but it seems like he's tired of leaves in the gutters and shady window... hahahah so for that purpose would work. Something I would do, but maybe not him.

Ahh, didn't catch that it was going to be taken down anyway. Then no harm to try to save it.
In late winter to early spring, cut it back heavily to approx the hight you want for future bonsai leaving some foliage on smaller branches. Pay atention to cut angels so water is not trapped anywhere. Late summer to early athum, cut the roots around 1 meter circle around the trunk (in this case more of half a circle). Then next early spring, lift it.
The question is If it is worth the effort and If the owner want to wait that long to have it removed.
