Gardenia/jasmine potting advice was created by Itcomesbetweenus

I was recently gifted a rooted stem that I was told was a jasmine bonsai because I enjoy houseplants but I have no experience with bonsai in general and while searching online the information I’ve found implies that the plant is not actually jasmine but rather gardenia.

I looked around for potting advice but most of it seems to be behind a paywall so I did my best guess at a soil and substrate admixture based on generic bonsai advice. I’ve had it for less than a week and I know it will take time for the roots to take hold in a new pot but I have no idea how to tell if it’s struggling or not.

When I originally received the cutting it had two slightly brittle green leaves which seem to have shriveled completely but I’m not sure if that’s normal.

I live in Texas and it’s been in the triple digits so I can’t just leave it on the back porch without it getting scorched but I have taken it outside for a few hours in the evening so it can get some sun and air without completely overheating. The soil has not dried out completely yet and I know that usually overwatering is more upsetting to a plant than letting it dry completely for a day or two but I have no idea what I’m supposed to be doing and I can’t spend $50 to watch a couple videos.

Is there something else I should be doing, is there a way to tell if it’s taking to the new pot, or do I just need to wait a couple weeks to find out if it’s dead or not?

The plant is a Gardenia it is not bonsai. 名媛直播 is the way the plant is styled it is not a species. Therefor treat it as a houseplant and you will be fins.

Second Geoff with just one adition:

For trees generally underwatering is a bigger problem than overwatering. Never let a tree dry out completely for a day or two as you say. That is generally speaking. There are exceptions and I don't know the species in topic myself. Do your own research on the species. There are endless resources to pick from If you just leave the word bonsai out of your search.

Cool thanks. So how do I know whether this dead looking twig has taken to its pot?

Just to be clear here. There’s a period of weeks and maybe even months where it might be dead and it might be thriving but I won’t know until it starts sending out some green shoots? And there’s no timeline on how long that usually takes?
