New ‘名媛直播’. was created by Fransen

Hi all,

I’m Peter and new to the forum and new to bonsai, though I’ve read quite a bit and watched hours of video. Have a few seedlings and just got this monster below.
A friend had it inside, hadn’t watered it for a long time, wanted to throw it out, so it ended up outside. Even though still not watered, it started to grow. So I took it with me to see what I could learn from it.
First off, no idea what kind of tree it is. Is it an inside or outside plant? No idea. Plant app doesn’t recognise it from the bark, about 7% certainty it says, so will have to wait for the leaves to grow.

I know it’s a monster, but I really want to use it to learn. Who knows, might be able to save it and make something decent out of it.
I know it’s too thick at the top, so there’s my first question: do I take it off and hope to grow new branches? Or leave it and practice with the branches that will grow for now.

I know not to shape, repot, or do anything to it at the moment, because of the time of the year, and well, there’s nothing to shape anyways, but any advice what to do in time would be appreciated.
My friend ‘had it for years’, so maybe I do need to change the soil without doing anything to the roots? It seems to have some sort of ‘bonsai’ soil, as there’s perlite mixed through it. But there won’t be any nutrients left in the soil.

Thanks!
Peter

I am fairly sure it is sprouting new leafs in the photos. Not sure at all. But your story and the trees will to live, I would guess ficus.

Hey Peter, it seems like some sort of grafted Ficus.

I'm not sure if you could save it, and leaves bellow the grafted are might not be ideal (if it was in fact grafted).

But if you wanna do it just for the sake of trying, go for it... Just don't be too hopefull.

Thanks, yes, it’s definitely sprouting new leaves. My first idea was also a Fivus: it is the ‘Ikea-名媛直播’ here in the Netherlands. And lot’s of garden centres.
I think for now, I’ll just let it grow and see what happens. Try to keep it alive. I think I want to use the branches that might grow to try out the different techniques like pruning, backbudding, wiring etc. If I cut the top and hope for new branches, I might lose the opportunity to learn.
If I can keep it alive, next year I’ll repot it and see what I can do with the roots.
Any other tips/ideas are more then welcome.

Once the leaves have fully developed, you can compare them to bonsai tree identification resources or maybe post another photo here.

The top of the tree is significantly thicker and doesn't have much branching, I would hold off on pruning for now. Before pruning in the future ensure that the tree is healthy and has sufficient energy reserves to support new growth.

Since it has been in the same soil for a long time and the soil appears depleted, repotting may be beneficial. Yes, repotting without cutting roots could actually be beneficial for a bonsai tree. While you would usually prune during repotting to maintain a compact root system, improve drainage, and stimulate new root growth, it's not always suitable for every situation.

In some cases, maybe yours, repotting without pruning could refresh the soil, and provide the tree with fresh nutrients. This process allows you to create a more favorable growing environment for the roots without disturbing or removing significant portions of the root system.

If you repot without pruning you minimize the potential stress on the tree and allow it to recover faster after repotting.

In the meantime, give the bonsai all the care you can:

1. Watering: Ensure it's properly watered. Check the moisture level regularly and water when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry.

2. Light and location: It's hard to know exactly what your tree might like since we don't know what it is. Some trees prefer full sun, while others do well in partial shade. Once you do know what you have, research its light requirements and make sure it gets adequate light.

3. Observation: Take the time to closely observe the tree as it grows and learn about its specific needs. Pay attention to any changes in its appearance, like the condition of the leaves, branches and how healthy it seems overall. Hopefully you can then adjust it's care to something better suited for the tree.

Thanks for your lengthy reply Ghellisbutter. I’ll repot without pruning. For now, it’s in the semi-shade and I’m keeping a good eye on the watering and how it’s doing.
I’ll definitely not prune it now, there’s not much to prune anyway. This years concern is to keep it alive and just let it grow I think, thanks!
