I just ordered a new kit from here for my first bonsai. I also want to give one as a wedding gift for my daughter and her fiancé, but wasn't sure about the timing. How far ahead is safe to order and get a new tree to give, and how long after it's gifted will they need to start working it?

I do see that my tree will take about 5-8 business days to arrive. The wedding is June 6th for anyone who feels like making calculations

There are no set time when the tree needs to be worked on. But I tend to advice beginners to at least wait a full growing season before starting to work on it. During that time learn care requirement and grow it to full health. Meanwhile study the tree and bonsai styling and make up a plan for your future design. That plan dictates when it makes sence to start training.
