Hi I’ve grown a bonsai from seed, Jerusalem Pine, been about a month and half and it has has great progress and shot from a seedling, I’ve been observing every day and watering when soil is dry, I noticed yesterday the stem had ‘fallen’ over so I thought it was leaning toward the light so I moved to windowsill (not in direct sunlight). However I dug the soil a little and I can see the base of the stem is feeble, brittle and weak that has caused the stem to bend, please can someone help I’m not sure if the bottom of the pot is too wet and caused this but the planter has a hole in the bottom for drainage, please help please see video

Cannot see the video but I do not have to.

The pine has succumbed to "wilt", a fungal infection caused by dark wet and cold conditions.

Pine needs full sun, outdoor environment for healthy growth. Indoor out of the sun this is the result.

Thank you, I’m very disappointed as I followed the manual to a T and it still failed, it’s a shame the instructions in the guide were not accurate.

I do have another seedling so I may try that and as you say keep it outside, although it’s been raining a lot here in the UK at the moment

Yeah, bonsai seed packages can look nice and are great looking gifts. The reality is that often they do not provide good information.

Sorry, mu frustration is showing. In fact, I once made a video because of posts like yours. That is how common your story is.

I think it is a nice little video, have a look;

Rain is excellent. Trees love rain and you don't need to water that often. Nobody protects the trees in the forest when it is raining, so we don't have to do it for our potted trees eigther. :)

Looking at nature tells you a lot.

Here in Alabama we have lots of sun, rain sometimes, and a very common weed called "pine trees". Pines love the sun and grow straight up, spreading branches out to get as much sun as possible.

Turpentine and other pine products were huge parts of the economy in the southeast. Years ago I drove by a nursery way north of here selling Southern White Pines for $60. We laughed.

Pines die out going north and in Pennsylvania or so there are very few, but there are lots of spruce and other conifers. I never saw a pine in Canada, but plenty of firs. Most bonsai people here have tried larch. Some twice (I tried twice) and some three times, but larches don’t grow in our combination of sun and temperature.

Trees are not real good at adjusting to environments where they did not evolve.

That is very interesting Ivan. In Europe the Scots pine is more abundant the more north one travels. I guess not all pines are equal either.

I agree on larches. They really need a good long freeze in winter to thrive. The best lumber one can get is sibirian larch. But not anymore, hoping for Putler so stop playing with fireworks so we can start to import it again.
