Hello Tropfrog

I’m going to follow your advice and leave him outside starting from today.

Can you advise about watering routines? Usually with him being indoors I water him roughly once a week, and once a month with liquid feed. I fully submerge him in water and leave for about 10 - 15 mins and that’s it.

I’ve noticed in the past he dries up very quickly in days I’ve brought him outside, how often should I water?

Many thanks for everyone who’s chipped in their 2 cents of knowledge on this thread, it’s all very appreciated and hopefully I’ll get Billy looking great again

Watering bonsai is allways the same. No matter location, species or substrate. This is the most important thing in bonsai care, without correct watering there are no reason to learn anything else about bonsai.

Once the substrate looks dry on the surface. Water on all of the surface abundantly with a fine nozzle until there are a steady flow of water pouring out the drainage holes. The frequency depends on location, species, substrate, climate, season etc. For my location in Sweden growing in mostly gritty substrate it is once a day in summer, but once a month in winter. Some people in central Europe needs to water two or three times a day in summer.

The dumping pot in a bucket of water method do not provide the roots and substrate with much needed oxygen. It should only be used If the tree for any reason got to dry and the substrate got hydrophobic. With good care that should never happen. But still a good method for life saving in urgent situations.
