Question about bur oak bonsai was created by PennyL

Hi! I'm new to the forum and would really appreciate some advice. I want to create a bur oak bonsai, but I've had no luck with acorns, and I can't find any prebonsai. So I'm thinking of buying a sapling, which, if I'm right, will enable me to create a larger bonsai than normal and if I give it space, results in a thicker trunk. The tree I have my eye on at the moment is between two and three feet tall, and it's intended for regular growth so it hasn't been pruned. My question is, can I slowly prune the top down to reduce the height to around 1.5 feet while still letting the trunk gain mass?

Thanks ahead of time for your input!

Cheers,
Penny

It is often best to cut WAY down and then let it grow, cut ALMOST as far down again, and repeat to create taper AND give the biggest cut time to close.

I have no idea what a burroak is, so you need to check what species it is, and whether it easily throws bud on the trunk. Many oaks do.

Thank you, leatherback—I appreciate your thoughtful response. I'm looking into the different oak species at the moment and will research how easily it yields lateral buds. I originally wanted to use an English oak, but I'm having a hard time finding one.

So if this species is likely to grow buds, I'd basically prune the apex (not sure if that's the correct term) down to the height I want in one go, i.e. reduce it by a foot? And then let the tree recover and widen out, repeat the process, and then repeat the process again?

Thanks again!
