dying Cryptomeria was created by Skye

My Cryptomeria was fine in September. After winter started the needles have been browning. I am not sure what the problem is or what I should do. I know I need to transplant it and am thinking about doing it this week since it is going to be warm but after the warm weather it turns really cold and will need to keep it in the garage. This bonsai has 3 Cryptomeria in it. 2 big ones and one smaller one int the back-middle. I am thinking about taking the one in the back out. I have put pictures in below and will date them.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I guess first winter for this species in your care?

Cryptomeria do turn brown in winter naturally. However quite late for you, but still I would not be worried until late spring when it naturally turn green again.

No, I made this bonsai 3 years ago so this is its 3rd winter and it has never done this.
I thought that maybe I wasn't watering enough but it is hard to tell if that is the reason.
When should I transplant it and should I take the 3rd Cryptomeria out when I do to give it more room?
I think that I am getting near the time when I should start to transplant my bonsais, right?

Thanks!

I have no first hand experience on this species. Just Google cryptomeria and winter. You will find hundreds of pictures of Brown trees. I don't know why it didn't happen to your trees the last 3 years. Maybe kept too warm?

I have been researching it and have seen the pictures you are talking about which does make sense. I was reading how an Apple tree can give rust disease to a Cryptomeria. Of course the air-layer from my apple tree that I did 2 years ago is sitting right in front of it.

Thanks!

Thx for reaching out. I have not been on the site a lot lately, so late to the party..

I do not have, nor have I had, this species, ever. So I am not sure what normal behaviour in winter is. As mentioned above, the species is know to bronze up over winter. If you look at the foliage carefully, bronzed foliage is still lush and succulent, not dry and brittle like dead foliage.

The way it progresses makes me think root issues (too wet?) or fungal. But. Really guessing now.

Thanks, Leatherback. The foliage is not dry and brittle so I will just need to wait and see.

Looking forward to the spring. I am eager to transplant it.
