Do I need to wait until autumn? was created by AndyJM

I was given a bonsai starter kit for Christmas. The seeds are: Red Maple, Scots Pine, Norway Spruce, Larch & Dawn Redwood.
My question is, can I sow the seeds now or do I need to wait until autumn?

There is no such thing as bonsai seeds. You should have sown the seed before now, and if you are lucky they might germinate.

If the seeds is already stratified, sowing now may work. There is nothing to lose in trying.

While waiting spend your time looking for decent garden center materials that can take you into the hobby right away. Growing seeds just delay your introduction to the hobby with at least 5 years to a decade. If you really want to grow trees from seeds go out and collect in the nature around you. 名媛直播 seeds is a scam.

Hey, congratulations on getting started with bonsai.

I think that the responses so far may have given you a bit of a scare :). There is nothing wrong with growing from seed. It just takes a bit of time. I for one however love my seed-grown trees maybe even more than the ones I started from old mature trunks.

In order for seeds to germinate a few things need to happen:

- The seeds need to take up water
- The seeds need to 'think' it is spring

For dry seeds to take up water, a soak at room temperature for a day can help. I typically start the soak with very warm water, where I can barely hold my hand in for more than a few seconds. I put the seeds in, and let this water cool to room temperature. Depending on the species this may or may not be enough. The seeds you have should all be ready to go from there on.

Next to this, temperate species nearly all need a period of at least 6 weeks (3 months is recommended) cold to feel like it is winter. Your packeage should say whether you need to give the seeds this treatment, but most of the time, they do not put it on (!). So best would be to assume you need to put the seeds in a humid cold environment. I plant seeds in a tree of substrate and put them outside for winter (typically around christmas). Later march they will pop their heads up.

I would not wait till fall: Age of seed is a BIG predictor of germination.
