I purchased this tree last year. The tree has not been looked after in recent years and had a lot of dead branches, the pot also had an ants nest when I collected the tree. I have removed the dead branches but otherwise no work has been done to the tree.

I am looking for general advice on how to get the tree back in good health and advice on chasing the foliage back to a more compact tree so that I can rebuild.

Very nice tree! Buds seems to be popping out everywhere, which indicates that it is healthy.

Just spend some time looking at it, decide what you want it to be in the future and start working towards that.

Oh, yes....If there are still an ants nest in the pot, now is a good time for repotting and removing the nest.

Hi Geoff, yes you did. It was great to meet you and as you can see I have taken your advise and have posted the tree here.

yes it was good to meet. I like your tree it is better than you were talking about it. Looks very good. As tropfrog said repot any time soon. Fertilser as well once it is growing well.

Thank you I will repot it soon. I am hoping that it isn't too difficult to chase the tree back as it's very leggy at the moment. I was thinking of changing the front to I believe picture 4? As the nebari is quite nice and it hides the inverse taper a bit.

What do you think of removing the lowest branch at some point?

I like the front in the second to last picture, I would probably not remove the lower branch but shorten it a lot, also I would think about air layering the top as it would make a nice tree. With the front in that second last picture the lower branch goes towards the back so does not look as long. You could prune quite hard to get it back. I would put it in an oval pot if you have one.

Pruning back would be my second action. And maybe not any time too soon, IF you are concerned with the health of your tree.

In general, I like the tree. I would not prune too much for the time being, and first let it leaf out and grow.

What you need to do is repot. Do you know how to repot? This is NOT a matter of plopping it into a new pot. There are some videos on the topic around (I would of course recommend going to my channel watch mine, paying attention to the Elm: A more mature tree repotting). Once the tree has settled into the new pot, and has grown well, you get a much better budding response after a prune.

For this spring, I would just do the repot, and see how it responds.

Two videos which I think could help:
