What to do if leaves fallen off and new branch sprouted? was created by catherinewarner

I am very new to bonsai. I was gifted a bonsai (Chinese Privet, I believe) for Christmas.
Not long after I received it, all the leaves fell off despite me trying to follow all care rules attentively. I have a feeling it is because it was wrapped in a box (no light or water) for a few days?!) - however, a new branch sprouted so I assumed all the current branches would regrow leaves soon, but that hasn't happened. It has grown a tiny branch/leaf at the bottom too though.
I have no idea if I should be trimming any of the branches, old or new, or what has happened/if it can be fixed.
Light: I've been trying to keep it in very bright light (not typically this window but it is here for today's photoshoot) and I am trying to keep the new branch angled away from the sunlight so it doesn't lean any further over!
Watering: I read that it should be watered every day, and I have been doing that so far.
Feeding: I only received at Christmas and the bonsai food I got suggests not to use until March, so not given any plant food yet.
Pruning: I haven't trimmed at all yet, just watering and watching, because I don't want to kill any good branches and do further damage - but is the new branch taking energy away from the main tree?
I've added a couple of photos for reference.
Any help/tips appreciated on where to go from here!

Thanks for your excellent post with all required info!
Judging from what you write (and the photo) I think overwatering might be the issue here. Do not water on a schedule! Water on observation: www.bonsaiempire.com/basics/bonsai-care/watering

Thanks - I’ll amend my watering schedule!
Would you expect the rest of the branches to re-grow eventually if I fix my watering schedule?

I would expect the dead parts to stay dead.
