My partner recently purchased a flat tray container bonsai with Larix decidua. It is a well established specimen. AS we head into winer we are a bit unsure as to how it should be winterized. WE can expect to see temperatures in the 10-15 degrees below zero Fahrenheit as occasional lows. Would anyone offer suggestions as to winter storage? We would be most appreciative.. Thanks

Larch is fully hardy to your location. Just keep it outdoors on the ground. Protected from cold winds if possible. If you get lots of snow, just let it cover the tree.

Tropfrog, Thanks for your response. We also are a bit worried about the very special flat tray under the tree. Will certainly take your response into consideration...

"Flat tray"? Do you mean the pot?
Obviously, trees that are frost hardy should be in pots that can endure the frost. If you got your tree from someone that know bonsai, this is no problem. If the pot cracks in winter, it was wrong pot and needed to be changed anyway.

Tropfrog, It shouldn't be a problem. This bonsai was purchased from a well -known bonsai artist who lived in our area of Northeast NY. It is well established & the pot(curved tray form) was made by a bonsai artist who is also a potter. Once again , I appreciate your input. Snow expected here tonight. Good insulation for our extensive gardens. best regards

Well, taking advices from reputable bonsai artists in ones local area is always the best. I am sure you can ask the person you bought the tree from how he winterized the tree before he sold it.
