Is heat needed for a greenhouse (space heater etc.)? was created by BentoSalesBoy
Posted 2 years 2 months ago #78591Good Afternoon Y'all,
I live in the Pacific Northwest, in zone 6b, and this time of year snow is quite common. I bought a small greenhouse for this winter, and am curious how much heat is fair to expect it to keep in. Some of my seedlings such as the Pine and Spruce I know can handle the snow with ease. But I also have a Brazilian Rosewood in there, and am wondering if it is worth getting a little space heater or something to keep it warm.
Or is it fair for me to assume with the greenhouse all closed up, (and at ground level, I moved it so it's not on my patio), that it will stay 10-20 degrees warmer insider?
(I realize this question may be a little specific to the material of the greenhouse covering, but figured it was worth asking).

When sun is shining small greenhouses can get really warm, even hot. So daytime you need to keep an eye of the temperature and open if over 10c. Nighttime the temperature will always drop to the same as outdoors.
I would not keep spruce and pine in a small greenhouse. They are better off outdoors.
Brazilian rose wood is sensitive to frost. I have not tried it myself, but most non hardy plants do well in heated greenhouses with termostat set at 5c. Make sure to isolate well so it does not cost you a fortune to heat. Oh yes....pines and spruces will not survive this setup, if you heat they need to be outdoors.
