Fertiliser ? was created by Bamboo Mat

Hi all, I’m reading mixed instruction on fertilising at this time of year ( UK), in particular I currently have a Llex ( Bonsia, believe it’s around 8 years old) a cotoneaster ( shrub waiting to be bonsia’d next year.
I’ve read to fertilise once a month during winter and I’ve lost read not to during winter?

So I’m confused, what would you recommend and what product to use, liquid solid, slow release ?

Thanks, Lee.

No fertiliser in winter, trees are dormant and do not need and will not use fertiliser, start again in spring once buds are opening not before.

There are varying opinions on this. Some in the botanical world have measured that the trees take up nitrogen in the winter building up for the spring. It won't harm much either way, I think.

Trees that are fed too much nitrogen are more prone to aphids infestations. That may be considered harm for the tree, but secondary.

I use osmocote pro. Control release fertilizer. It releases nutrients to the soil based on moist and temperature. I do not remove the pellets for winter, but asume that they release very little during that period. If not used in winter, everything will be consumed come spring.

Hey Ivan.

Yes, since it takes a bit of time for the plants to absorb and reacts on some fertilizer, you can fertilize it at the end of winter, so when it wakes up, nutrients are available...
But it's more likely when winter is already fading, and days beggin to warm up, and not like on the very winter...
And also, a last fertilization on the beggining of autumn, so the tree can get a healthy amount of nutrients to make it's winter reserve.

However, I don't think that fertilize them a few weeks before spring would have a huge impact, but when you have a lot of plants, might be convenient to start spring works a bit earlier...
